Congrats to my grandson Sylvester, (we call him Sly) on graduating from pre-school today.

Glad I got to attend the ceremony with his proud parents, and his oh, so skeptical sister. Her time’s coming. Now, on to bigger and better things in kindergarten this fall and beyond.Â

I don’t mean to cast any shade on your grandson, whom I’m sure deserved all the kudos he received! But your post makes me wonder: does someone really “graduate” from pre-school? Don’t they just automatically go on to kindergarten when they get old enough? Does anyone get “held back” in pre-school, and required to stay another year? “Nope, this kid doesn’t qualify to attend kindergarten. Yes, he’s old enough, but he’s till eating play-doh, so nope, hold him back a year.”

For someone not meaning to cast shade, you sure need some more sunshine 😉

Well, THAT can’t be denied. And you are certainly allowed to be proud of your own grandson, for everything he has achieved. But putting that aside, I’m actually thinking about this. The very first time I ever wore one of those silly hats and participated in a graduation ceremony, it was after my senior year in high school. Since you and I are the same age, I’m betting it’s the same for you. Do you think the younger generations have benefited from being handed a gold ribbon every time they simply showed up for things? Yep, turning 5 is a big deal and should be celebrated. With a birthday party. Does it also need a ceremony with a cap and gown? Sounds like that’s more for the parents than for the kid. And I know that, since I’m not a parent, my observations on parenting should be taken with all the respect they so richly deserve…but I’m still thinking about it…
